Step Two- Mentor Training Workshop

Training your student mentors to run the orientation day and continuing mentor sessions

The second step in the Kick-Off Transition Program is the one-day training of the upper class student mentors. Your mentors will be selected in the spring and trained prior to working with the incoming students. A Kick-Off Mentor Trainer comes to your school for a day in the spring or summer to train your upper-class student mentors. This exciting and interactive day is full of fun leadership and team building activities and develops the skills needed to effectively work with the incoming students. This training helps establish a core group of upper class students who will make a positive impact on your school and change the lives of many of your incoming students.

The training day includes:

• Understanding and developing school goals for the mentoring program
• Leadership training and problem solving activities
• Team building activities for student and teacher mentors
• Activities to improve listening skills and other mentoring skills
• Discussion of some of the legal and ethical issues involved in mentoring
• Developing and rehearsing activities for the Kick-Off Orientation Day
• Discussing the year-long mentoring sessions

Mentor Training workshops will be scheduled during the spring and summer based on Kick-Off Mentor Trainer availability in your area. Dates for the Kick-Off Mentor Training will be decided at the Kick-Off Coordinator workshop when possible.
